Innocent Smile

It all started when Mommy died
And even though Daddy cried...

Through the walls I can hear him scream
I close my eyes and try to dream
The floor shakes as his body falls
I try so hard to ignore his calls
He screams, "daddy, no!" as the crying stops
My eyes shoot to the phone, should I call the cops?
The noises fade as my dad passes out
My brother is dead, I have no doubt

Only we can see that the innocent smile
Will only fool others for a little while
The smell of the whiskey can't hide the truth
But I'm too scared to know what to do

As the rain pours down, I creep out of my room
I see him lying on the floor, I'm not a moment too soon
I cradle his bloody head 'cause his ribs are broken
Not one fucking word had to be spoken
He looks up at me through the bruises and blood
He mouths three words as his eyes close for good
I hold him as close as I possibily can
Here lies my dead brother in my very own hands

Only we can see that the innocent smile
Will only fool others for a little while
The smell of the whiskey can't hide the truth
But I'm too scared to know what to do

I pass by his empty room, there's a hand on my shoulder
Dad looks down at me and says, "just wait til you're older"
My eyes shut again as I try to remember
That cold, lonely night back in December
So innocently he walks back to the kitchen to drink
It's only now that my mind wanders and begins to think
I can't imagine what makes him so upset and so mad
But that murderous man is my very own dad
